How To: Save Posts For Later

Posted In +HOW TO, +TOOLS & TIPS - By Aly Juma On Sunday, July 31st, 2011 With 19 Comments

So far, the +1 button on Google+ only tracks things you like off the site, but not posts you like in Google+ itself. A simple work around using Circles can solve this problem, brought to you by +Saidur (Cy) Hossain.

1. Create a Circle For Saved Items

To begin, you need to create a circle (you can name it anything), and only add yourself to that circle.

2. Find a Post of Interest

Next is to find a post that interests you, that you want to bookmark, refer back to later, or just archive.

3. Click the Share Button

If you want to save the post, just click the ‘share’ button that is towards the bottom of the post.

4. Add Your “Saved” Circle

Finally, just add the circle you created for this purpose, click share, and you’re all set! Now, whenever you want to find posts that you saved, just visit the stream for the “Saved” circle and it will all be in one place.

This is great not only for tracking posts of interest, but writing post drafts, memos, etc. Again, special thanks to +Saidur (Cy) Hossain and you can find the complete slideshow here.

+Update 1: Usability Boost Chrome Extension

Usability boost is a all-in-one Google+ chrome extension packed with plenty of features. We recently reviewed the app here. Usability Boost revamps the look and feel of the User Interface (not like Google Plus is lacking in that department). This is one of our personal favorites because it really does a great job in separating content into blocks, allowing you to focus on what you are currently viewing. It has also been updated to “star” your favorite posts. After installing the extension from here, you will notice a star next to each post. Click on a star to save a post for later.

To view your starred posts, simply click on the Starred Option underneath the notifications option on the left sidebar. We are big fans of this extension just because it really revamps the look and feel of Google+. However, if you want a lite solution to save your posts, for later, check out our review on PinIt below!

+Update 2: PinIt Chrome Extension

Don’t want to deal with an all-in-one extension? We just got done beta testing a nifty little Google Chrome extension created by Garth Humphreys called PinIt for those looking for a lite solution. PinIt is an awesome new way to “pin” your favorite posts for later and view them on the right sidebar for later viewing. To get the application, install it via the Chrome Web Store and install it. Once the extension is installed, fire up Google+ within a new Chrome tab, and pins will appear on the right side of each post within your stream. To save one for later, simply click it, name it, and save it as illustrated below

After saving, you should see an area in the right sidebar displaying all your Pinned Threads. Click on any to go to the post page. Questions/feedback/comments? Let us know in the comment box below and we’ll try to troubleshoot it with Garth and update any issues.

I named it Bookmarks but thank you for the tip.

This may be a silly question, but how do I add myself to a circle?

  • Mike Gorom

When you click the ‘dimmed’ circle that says Add A New Circle… you name the circle then you have the option to ADD someone to it right there. Enter YOUR email address you used to create your G+ account

  • kmself

There’s also a “Helper for G+” extension which adds a bookmark star to posts, and creates a bookmarks folder where the posts are saved.

  • Lalsox

Thank you, very simple and effective!

  • Jkglasgow70

Thanks Mike! I created an empty circle and shared to it to test it out and it also worked, but I will add myself just be safe.

FYI: You don’t have to add yourself to the circle. Since you can see all of your own posts, you can just create a circle named Saved or Bookmarks or whatever you choose & start posting. I’m already considering having 2 “Bookmarks” circles, so I can keep miscellaneous posts in one and G+ news & tips in another (at least until I’m more familiar with it all).

How to retrieve the old posts ? I found that I could only get back the old posts up to 19 July.

Bit tedious to do and if I’m at a PC I can probably read it then.

If I’m using the mobile app, which is usually when I’d want to bookmark a post, I can’t share it to my own circle.
